Harar - Gateway to the East

A trip to the east by surface passes through Awash National Park, 211 Kms east of Addis Ababa. The park covers 827 square kilometers (319 square miles). The park takes its name from the Awash River which marks the park's southern boundary.

The park offers quite good wildlife and outstanding birdlife viewing. 462 bird species have been recorded recently. Of these six are endemic. The camping grounds, near the bank of the Awash River, and the Palm streams areas are the best sites to spot many species of birds.

Dire Dawa is a result of the country's only railway line that links Addis Ababa with Djibouti. The line runs for 785 kilometres (9,487 miles). Dire Dawa, 520 kilometres(323 miles) from Addis, is served daily by Ethiopian Airlines. Dire Dawa is used as a base when visiting the nearby caves with their prehistoric paintings, located at a place called Lege Oda, about 46 kms(29 miles) from the town.

The ancient walled city of Harrar is one of the holy cities of Islam. It was registered by UNESCO as a world heritage site. It is also recognized as a city whereby different religions and ethnic groups live peacefully.

Harar, which was a centre of Islamic learning in the early stages, provides a lot in terms of attractions. Sites of interest include the grand mosque, the Harari Museum, Harar Museum, the five gates and the Rimbaud (French Poet) house and the big and small markets within this ancient city.

In the evening Harar offers a special activity found nowhere. The Hyena man feeds the beasts in front of visitors and someone with courage can test it for himself. It is indeed a unique experience.
